Nadie, sin embargo, sabe que ocurrió realmente ese día de diciembre de 1888. De hecho, hasta hace poco, ni siquiera podíamos estar seguros de que se cortó la oreja... Creen que lo que hizo Van Gogh con su oreja se explica con las corridas de toros pues, al final de una corrida exitosa, le cortan las orejas al toro. El problema con esta versión es que cuando Van Gogh estuvo en Arles no le cortaban las orejas de los toros. Esa tradición fue importada de España después. El misterio seguía en pie y una extranjera se empecinó en desentrañarlo.
