Trump Administration Hardens Its Attack on Climate Science

President Trump has rolled back environmental regulations, pulled the United States out of the Paris climate accord, brushed aside dire predictions about the effects of climate change, and turned the term “global warming” into a punch line rather than a prognosis.

Now, after two years spent unraveling the policies of his predecessors, Mr. Trump and his political appointees are launching a new assault.

Green issues come to fore in European election

The strong showing of green parties in the European election has raised hopes among some voters that global warming and other environmental issues will be given more serious consideration across the continent.

Provisional results on Monday showed the left-leaning Greens coming in fourth in the balloting with 69 seats, an increase of 17 from the last election five years ago.

The results also showed how environmental concerns can transcend the political issues that dominate most European Union elections.

Huawei will stop providing bootloader unlocking for all new devices

Earlier this month, we wrote about Huawei users not being unable to access the page for generating bootloader unlock codes. The page was removed with no explanation, but they were at least still taking requests in a Google Doc and giving out bootloader unlock codes. Today, the news is much grimmer. Huawei will stop providing unlock codes completely. The announcement says they have stopped the unlock code application service to “provide better user experience and avoid issues caused by ROM flashing.” The service will be stopped in 60 days...

Chinese Tech Giant ZTE May Be First Victim of a New U.S. Cold War

The Chinese firm ZTE said on Wednesday it had ceased “major operating activities” after the Trump administration banned the company last month from using components made in the United States. With manufacturing halted at the ZTE plant in Shenzhen, factory workers have been getting called in for training sessions every other day or so — a snooze, they say. The rest of the time, they loaf around in nearby dorms. Trading in the company’s shares has been suspended for weeks.

The Preacher and Vietnam: When Billy Graham Urged Nixon to Kill One Million People

There’s a piquant contrast in the press coverage across the decades of Billy Graham’s various private dealings with Richard Nixon, as displayed on the tapes gradually released from the National Archive or disclosed from Nixon’s papers. We’ll come shortly to the flap over Graham and Nixon’s closet palaverings about the Jews, but first let’s visit another interaction between the evangelist and his commander-in-chief. Back in April, 1989, a Graham memo to Nixon was made public. It took the form of a letter from Graham, dated April 15, 1969...

Switzerland has too many fat cats

Cats are the most popular pet in Switzerland. Since the majority of Swiss residents live in rented apartments, indoor cats are common. Veterinary practices in the country told newspaper Blick that between 20 and 40 percent of the pets they see are too fat, with cats particularly affected. The reason? Overfeeding and lack of exercise, veterinarians told the paper. “Indoor cats often lack the incentive to move and start to eat out of boredom,” vet Martina Schybli told the paper.

Comment by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein on the situation in Catalonia, Spain

GENEVA (2 October 2017) - I am very disturbed by the violence in Catalonia on Sunday. With hundreds of people reported injured, I urge the Spanish authorities to ensure thorough, independent and impartial investigations into all acts of violence. Police responses must at all times be proportionate and necessary. I firmly believe that the current situation should be resolved through political dialogue, with full respect. I call on the Government of Spain to accept without delay the requests by relevant UN human rights experts to visit.

The former KKK 'grand wizard' happy with the words of the US President

Here's what you need to know about President Donald Trump's wild news conference Tuesday: It drew the immediate praise of David Duke. The President's abrupt and belligerent about-face Tuesday, in which he lashed out at the media for mischaracterizing white supremacist protesters in Charlottesville, drew the swift condemnation of a number of lawmakers, including Republicans, and shocked the people who witnessed them. But one person who was very happy with the words of the US President was the former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard David Duke (...)

How the FAA Killed Uber for Planes

Flight-sharing helped fill seats on small, private trips and cut costs. But regulators stopped it. That is, until the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) caught wind of all this innovation and decided to quash it once and for all. In a sneaky bid to shut down this kind of arrangement, the FAA decided to expansively interpret its own definition of a "common carriage" operator so that non-commercial small-scale pilots using these services would be legally put on the same level as the big boy commercial flights.

Cyclists strip off for more road safety

The bare truth about cycling in a city is that it’s extremely dangerous. That’s the message from hundreds of people who took part in the 14th edition of the World Naked Bike Ride in the Spanish capital, Madrid. Protesters say it’s a reminder that cyclists are constantly exposed with next to no protection. “We don’t want any more deaths of cyclists in Madrid and on the highways. There must be more respect for cyclists and people should go out and ride bikes so there’ll be less pollution,” explained Lucy.

VHS Tapes: How Archivists Are Working To Save Them

With VHS tapes degrading, most home videos from the '80s and '90s won't be viewable in a decade. Mary Kidd pops a VHS tape in the deck and rewinds. Two kids appear on the screen, dancing to music and laughing. Kidd and her colleagues meet in this loft in Tribeca in New York City every Monday to digitize tapes like this one. The loft has racks of tape decks, oscilloscopes, vector scopes and wave-form monitors that help ensure a quality transfer from analog to digital. Most work professionally, but they volunteer their free time to do this.

John Ellenby dies at 75

I wouldn’t normally be writing a column early on a Saturday morning but I just read that John Ellenby died and I think that’s really worth mentioning because Ellenby changed all our lives and especially mine. If you don’t recognize his name, John Ellenby was a British computer engineer who came to Xerox PARC in the 1970s to manufacture the Xerox Alto, the first graphical workstation. He left Xerox in the late 1980s to found Grid Systems, makers of the Compass — the first full-service laptop computer.
