Bueno... "ausentes" de todo no están.
I am feeling heart-broken by what's happened in beloved Bolivia. I was living there when Evo Morales came to power with such hope and sense of possibility, and even ended up working for him as a media coordinator at one of the people's climate summits that made history. I can tell many stories including one where my then baby daughter was fascinated by his nose and tried to grab it!
The MAS government made some amazing advances in terms of poverty, indigenous rights, a historic new constitution, energy sovereignty, trade alternatives, nature rights in the early years. At that time, there were so many amazing people with ideals and creativity at the heart of the government and considerable debate and dialogue.
That doesn't mean there weren't always tensions and contradictions at the heart of MAS, especially the way they undermined autonomous social movements that could hold it accountable through their relationships of clientelism. Over time more and more of my comrades left the government disillusioned and were often then vilified, and MAS seemed ever more to lose its ethical and political compass - riding roughshod of indigenous community rights to build roads and expand gas production, signing deals with agro-industrial oligarchs, and ultimately ignoring the constitution to stay in power at all costs. Which is where we are today with bands of militias from both the former government and its opposition wreaking acts of violence and revenge and a very uncertain future.
The tragedy is that MAS actions have fuelled the rise of a deeply fascist reactionary right which scares me. It seems Evo might have started to realise that towards the end but then it was too late. And I fear that what could replace Evo could be way worse so I understand why many progressive voices are expessing support for Evo and the MAS government. I oppose nearly all the opposition political leaders who have surged to the front, many of whom are taking advantage in a toxic brew of polarisation and revenge. But it's also not honest to say this is a simplistic right-wing coup against a left-wing government as so many people who don't know Bolivia are pronouncing. I listen to my Bolivian friends who say this was a popular uprising in response to Evo's actions and believe we must listen to them. When we lose our principles and fail to stand up for democracy we are buying into a logic where power matters more than principles which is what got MAS into this mess.
I just hope with all my heart that there is a peaceful solution which brings Bolivians together rather than divides them further, and that some of the advances in recent years such as indigenous pride are not lost. And I hope the left and progressive movements that take power can learn the lessons so that we don't repeat the same experiences in other countries. If we don't have an effective strategy that looks at how to counter the tendency of parties, states and governments to centralise power, then history will repeat itself.
