Catalonia calling for the leader of the government in exile
Carles Puigdemont finds there is much to be said for staying in Brussels
YESTERDAY by Robert Shrimsley
The world has a new and heroic freedom fighter. De Gaulle, Gandhi, Mandela and now Carles Puigdemont, deposed leader of Catalonia who, as Spain took central control over his region, fled to Brussels and is refusing to return until he has guarantees about his safety. One can only imagine the conversations between the leader in exile and his aides.
The scene: a restaurant in Brussels.
Carles Puigdemont: I think I’ll start with the escabeche.
Aide: Madrid has charged our comrades. They are in court today.
CP: Tell them to be brave. Coratge als meus amics. I am with them in spirit.
Aide: I think they would rather you were with them in person.
CP: No. I need to remain free to inspire our people, to mobilise opinion, to plan our next steps.
Aide: So what are our next steps? Form a government in exile?
CP: Perhaps.
Aide: We need a grand gesture.
CP: Yes, let us toast them.
Aide: I was thinking a defiant return to Barcelona.
The hero and leader bit, I like. I am definitely up for that. But the martyr bit . . .
CP: Ah Barcelona, will I ever see Las Ramblas again?
Aide: We can have you back there in hours. We could return — like Lenin. A sealed train to the Perpignan Station.
CP: I would need guarantees.
Aide: What, like a good buffet car? We will get no guarantees. Did Gandhi have guarantees? Don’t think we don’t know about the lawyer you’ve hired.
CP: What about him?
Aide: He’s an asylum lawyer. You are planning to run out on us.
CP: Is he? I had no idea. I thought he did conveyancing.
Aide: You have to go back. You must return to huge crowds and defy the Spanish to arrest you.
CP: But what if they do?
Aide: Then the world will learn the truth about Spanish democracy.
CP: But I’ll be in prison.
Aide: But your name will be on everyone’s lips. You will be our hero; our leader; our martyr.
CP: The hero and leader bit, I like. I am definitely up for that. But the martyr bit . . . They are talking about a 30-year stretch. I told you this would happen. I said: “Don’t push independence. Madrid won’t like it.” But you all knew better. You were all calling me a traitor. Now they’ll lock us up and throw away the key. I could have got us more power over direct taxation. Why did you all insist on declarations of independence?
Aide: Because we’re separatists, not…
